Chapter 23: Ash Day

The Ash Dragon came down into the Great Square two mornings later, with the whole city watching from the roofs.

It landed so gently that the fountain barely rippled.

Its wings folded along its back, and its bright eyes looked around at the people with open curiosity.

Nobody ran.

Ryota had told them on the road back that nobody would need to.

Half of them had believed him.

The other half had climbed onto the roofs to get a better view of being wrong.

The dragon lowered its great head beside the city stone and looked for him.

Ryota stood on the top step in his work jacket, with the plastic strawberry still on his wrist.

Corisande stood at his shoulder with the escort sash across her coat and her father's watch on a new chain around her neck.

"Broker," said the dragon.

"Good morning."

"Good morning," it said, trying the words out. "That is what the carters say."

It laid one claw on the top of the city stone, carefully.
