Chapter 17: The Tea Tray
The servants set the trays down at the high table with the soft click of porcelain.
Two cups for the Prince and Princess, two for the Dowager and her guest.
Yuwei looked at the cup on the left.
Its blue rim carried a faint pale dust along the lip.
She had seen it once before, at her very first tea, and it still turned her stomach.
The grey-liveried steward stood two paces behind the Dowager's chair with his hands in his sleeves.
He was the one who had stood in the alley.
He was the one who had supervised the tea for the Empress's banquet, at the Dowager's special request.
Lady Tao smiled across the table.
"Daughter, you pour so prettily. Will you do us the honor?"
"With pleasure, Mother."
Yuwei lifted the pot.
Hot water, a fine twist of leaf, and a curl of steam rose into the golden light.
She poured the cup on the right first, the clean one.
Then the one on the left, the dusted one, to the brim.
The prince watched her hands.
He did not move.
She set the pot down and stood.
