The clan elders sat at noon in the hall of ancestors, nine old men on a bench.

This time they looked tired instead of irritated.

Across the floor, the whole household of Anbei stood in rows along the walls, cooks and grooms and maids and guards.

Steward Ma had rung the bell, and nobody had been told to stay away.

Yuwei stood in the middle with the jade seal on its red cord lying on a cushion beside her.

The prince sat on a stool at the side of the hall.

He had told her on the road that he would not speak.

"You promised to watch," she had said.

"I'm going to watch," he had answered, and he had kept his hands folded the whole way.

The white-mustached elder cleared his throat.

"Princess Yuwei."

"The Empress has left the choice of who shall hold the seal of Anbei to the clan."

"The Prince's word, naturally, carries weight, but he has asked that it not be counted."

Yuwei glanced at the prince.

He gazed back with perfect innocence.

"Your claim has been questioned in this house," the elder went on.

"You came to us from a family without standing, under a contract of debt."
