Chapter 13: The Crossing

Lars's POV

She said it, and Garrick Holmberg folded in half on my shore.

I had wanted to see that for three winters.

Now that I was seeing it, I wanted to put my fist through his face anyway.

Marit stood in front of him with her splinted hand against her chest.

She did not shake.

I stood beside her and kept my hands loose, because if I closed them my claws would come.

"Please," Garrick said.

He was on his hands and knees in the snow.

"Marit. Come home."

"No."

"Tonight. I'll carry you across myself. Petra can see to your hand, and the pup..."

"The pup is fine."

"Then she belongs in her own pack." He lifted his head, and his blue eyes were red-rimmed and wild. "I'm not saying it to hurt you. The law says she's a Holmberg heir."

I heard the growl before I knew it was mine.

Garrick's eyes cut to me.

"You," he said. "You had my mate for ten days."

"She was your mate," I said. "She isn't now."

"You stood on your porch and told me to my face she was dead."

"Look at her throat."

He looked.

The mark he had put there three years ago was a flat gray scar now.

I watched him see it properly for the first time.

His mouth opened, and no sound came out.

Then he lunged to his feet, and his hand shot toward her belly.

"Let me just feel her..."

I don't remember crossing the ten feet.
