Chapter 23: Garrick's Debt
Garrick came on a Sunday in June, on foot, around the lake road.
He didn't bring the lantern this time.
He brought the senior elder, and Dag, and a lean woman in a Holmberg jacket whom I had known as the pack's beta for six years.
Lars met them at the foot of the porch steps.
I stood behind him on the boards with Elin on my hip, and Petra beside me with her arms folded.
"I'm not asking to come up," Garrick said.
"Good," said Lars.
"I wanted to say it where she could hear."
He looked at me, and then at the baby, and his eyes dropped.
He looked thinner than he had at the Gathering.
His beard was gone, and he had cut his hair short.
"The pack chose a new Alpha on Friday," he said. "It wasn't me, and it wasn't Dag. It's her."
The woman beside him lifted her chin.
"I'll try to deserve it," she said.
"She will," Garrick said. "I gave her the lodge keys this morning. I don't have any."
He took a folded paper from inside his coat.
"This is the Holmberg shoreline from the boathouse to the point, with the bay and the Moon Hole in it. Four hundred acres. I've had it deeded to Elin Lindqvist, in trust, until she's grown."
"No," I said.
"Marit..."
"I don't want it. I'm not taking your land to forgive you."
"It's not to forgive me." His voice was rough. "I can't be forgiven. It's the place where Eli died, and where you went in. I don't want any Alpha to own it again. She'll keep it, or she'll let it go."
