Chapter 6: The Enforcer

"I'll go alone," I told Lars.

"No."

"He's Garrick's enforcer, and he's been standing in your trees for an hour without attacking. If he wanted me dragged home, he'd have brought ten men."

Lars's jaw worked.

"Five minutes," he said. "Then I come out, and I won't ask."

"Fair."

I buttoned his parka over my belly.

"He won't hurt me, Lars."

I walked into the pines with my splint held tight against my ribs.

I found Dag's trail in under a minute.

It was a heavy-footed man's track, crossing the lake at a walk and then doubling back twice along the shoreline.

He had stopped at four different places to look up at the cabin.

At the fourth one he'd stood long enough to melt a bowl in the snow.

I came around a spruce and he was there, leaning against the trunk with his hat in his hands.

Dag was thick through the neck and shoulders, with a shaved head and a nose that had been broken at least twice.

He looked at me, and he did not look surprised.

"Luna," he said.

"Don't call me that."

"I will anyway." His voice was gravelly and low. "I smelled you on that porch. Yesterday. You were in the pantry."

"I know. You looked straight at me."

"I did." He turned his hat over in his big hands. "I didn't see any reason to tell him."

"He's your Alpha."

"He is." Dag shrugged. "He's also a man who broke a pregnant woman's hand in front of three hundred people. I've been standing behind him for nine years. I stood behind him for that."
