Chapter 9: The Scar

The scrape came again, closer to the door.

Then a young man's voice said, very softly, "Luna?"

I stood in the middle of the bedroom with a quilt around my shoulders and did not breathe.

"I can smell you. I'm not here to hurt you."

The door handle turned and caught on the bolt.

"Please. She told me to look."

He put his shoulder to the wood, and the bolt screamed in its housing and gave.

The door swung open.

A scout in a Holmberg jacket stood on the threshold.

He was barely twenty, with a boy's thin neck and a camera strap across his chest, and when he saw me his face went white.

"It's true," he whispered. "Oh, God. It's true."

I never found out what he planned to do next, because a gray shape hit him from the side.

It came out of the pines without a sound, huge and gray, and took him off the porch and into the snow in one motion.

The scout screamed once.

Then there was a weight on his chest, and teeth the length of my fingers at his throat, and he went silent.

Lars's wolf didn't bite him.

It held him there, shaking with something I could feel from the doorway, a low continuous growl that went through the porch boards and up into my feet.

"Lars," I said.

The growl didn't change.

"Lars, he's a kid. Let him up."

The wolf turned its head and looked at me, its eyes pale gold and wild.

Then it shuddered, and the bones shifted under the fur, and a man knelt in the snow with one hand on the scout's chest and the other braced beside his face.

Lars was in a torn pair of jeans, and nothing else, and his whole back steamed in the cold air.
