Chapter 15: Questioning

Giancarlo got out of the cab and buttoned his shirt cuffs.

"Am I under arrest?" he asked.

"You're being brought in for questioning," the woman with short gray hair said. "We'd like you to come voluntarily."

"Then I'd like to say goodbye to my son voluntarily."

She looked at the window, at the little face and the green dinosaur pressed against the glass.

"Two minutes."

The red door flew open before he reached it.

Rocco shot down the stoop in his dinosaur pajamas and bare feet and hit Giancarlo at the knees.

"Daddy! There's police! Nonna said a bad word at them!"

"I heard." Giancarlo picked him up. "What word?"

"I'm not allowed to say it."

"Good man."

Nonna stood in the doorway in her housecoat with a wooden spoon.

"Twenty years they come to this door," she told the detectives. "Twenty years they find nothing. Go home to your mothers."

"Ma'am," said the man with the coffee.

"Don't ma'am me. I knew your captain when he had hair."

Rocco looked from the police car to his father.

"Are you going to jail?"

The whole street went quiet. A neighbor on the next stoop stopped sweeping.

Giancarlo didn't look away from him.

"No. I'm going to go answer some questions."

"Like at school?"

"Like at school. They ask, I answer, I come home."

"What if you don't know the answers?"

"I know all of them, bud. That's the easy part."
