Chapter 24: Good Evening, Donna
I took the pager.
The screen said: "BUS VS TRUCK ON ATLANTIC. 9 INCOMING. SO SORRY. CONGRATS. COME NOW."
It was my charge nurse. She never said sorry.
I looked at my husband.
He was already reaching for his trousers.
"Giancarlo, it's our wedding night."
"It's morning. The wedding night was very good. I was there." He threw me my old scrubs from the overnight bag Nonna had packed, because Nonna packed for everything. "Get dressed, Doc. I'll drive."
"You'll drive?"
"Nine people," he said. "And you're the best they've got."
I walked into my ER at 6:40 on the morning after my wedding with rose petals still in my hair.
My charge nurse took one look at me and burst into tears.
Then she handed me a gown and said, "Bay one."
One year later, on a Friday night in October, I walked into the Hotel Marchese after a fourteen-hour shift.
My scrubs had a coffee stain down the front.
My parka had a new rip, in the other sleeve.
I was carrying a plastic grocery bag with a cake topper in it. A green dinosaur holding a candle shaped like a five.
The revolving door turned, and the warm air of the lobby hit my face.
