Chapter 8: The Candy

The preschool was a converted church hall on Union Street with a green iron fence around the play yard.

The teacher met us at the door with her hands clasped so tight her fingers were white.

She had already pulled the footage from the fence camera.

On the little office monitor, the recess yard was full of kids in puffy jackets.

A woman in a white coat and big sunglasses stood at the fence by the sandbox.

Platinum hair. A pink lollipop held out through the bars.

Rocco ran over. Of course he did. He ran over to everybody.

She crouched down to his height. She talked to him for almost two minutes.

She touched his curls.

"I didn't see her," the teacher said. "I was inside with a boy who bit someone. I'm so sorry, Mrs. Marchese. I'm so, so sorry."

It was the first time anyone at that school had called me Mrs. Marchese.

I'd signed Rocco up as Rocco Ames-Marchese and given my cell number and nothing else.

Somebody had done their reading since Friday.

Giancarlo stood behind me with his hands in his coat pockets.

He watched the screen without blinking until Whitney straightened up, waved to my son, and walked out of frame.

Then he said, very gently, "Thank you. You did nothing wrong."

The teacher burst into tears.

Out on the sidewalk he stopped walking.

"She touched his hair," he said.

"I saw."

"Carly."

"I know what you're going to say."

"I'm going to say I'm keeping my promise." His voice was so even it scared me. "And I'm going to say that starting today, there are two men on this school, two on the house and two on you. You can hate it."

"I don't hate it."

He looked at me.

"I don't," I said. "She came for my kid. Put four on the school."
