Chapter 16: The Overlook
The handle rattled twice and stopped.
A man's voice came through the front glass, muffled and unhurried.
"Ms. Sundquist? The panel says someone came in the back."
Cass's forehead dropped against my spine.
I took a breath and made my voice level.
"It's me," I called. "Working late."
"You want me to wait?"
"No, thank you. I'll be out in ten minutes."
"Lock the back behind you, now."
"I will."
The beam slid off the partition and down the street, and his boots crunched away on the sidewalk.
Cass's shoulders began to shake against my back.
"Don't," I whispered.
"I'm trying."
"If you laugh, I'll hit you with the stapler."
He laughed.
He laughed without a sound, with his whole body, and I felt it everywhere he was still inside me.
I started to laugh too, and it was almost too much.
He slid out, and I turned around, and we held on to each other against the desk.
Then we dressed in the dark.
He found my underwear in his back pocket and pretended he hadn't, and I took them from him and stuffed them in my coat.
I pinned my hair with the claw clip.
I locked the back door and set the alarm.
The two of us ran a block through the rain in our socks, carrying our boots.
His truck sat at the hardware store, under the single streetlight.
He opened my door and I climbed in, soaked and breathless, and he came around and started the engine.
"Where are we going?" I said.
"Somewhere with no flashlights."
He drove out of town on the river road.
He turned onto a gravel pullout above the Brule, where the road ended at a split-rail fence.
