Chapter 15: The Offer

Leigh sat at the Ritz lobby bar in a cream coat, with her blonde hair down and the silver heart ring on her right hand.

Two stools down from her, Elias read a newspaper he had clearly not bought for the news.

He did not look up when I came in.

I took the stool beside Leigh's, and the bartender poured me water without being asked.

"You came," Leigh said. "Good. I wanted to do this like adults."

She slid a check across the bar.

It was for five thousand dollars, drawn on the Hollander Brewing account, made out to me.

Under it was a typed page with a line for my signature.

It said the forty-eight thousand dollars had been a gift, freely given, and that I would not contest it.

I read it all the way down.

"Sign it," Leigh said. "Take the check. Don't come Saturday."

"This is the bar's account."

"So?"

"It's the account eleven paychecks bounced on."

"Troy will cover it Tuesday."

"He said Monday last week."

Leigh's smile thinned.

"You don't get it, do you? He chose me. He's chosen me every day for six years."

"I know. I did the math."

"You were what was in the apartment," she said. "You were Tuesdays."

Somewhere behind me a newspaper rustled and then went still.

I folded the typed page in thirds and put it in my folder with the note.

"Thank you," I said. "I didn't have your handwriting yet."

"What?"

"You wrote the memo on the gift paper in your own pen. It's a good sample." I pushed the check back to her with one finger. "Cash this one yourself. I'll watch."

Her smile was gone.

"Saturday I'll be in white, on his arm," she said, low. "And you'll be the girl who stole from him. Nobody remembers a note."

"Then it's lucky I made copies."
