Chapter 16: Zachary's Truth
Margot's voice stayed perfectly level.
"Zachary is exhausted," she told the table.
"He hasn't slept since the party, and he says foolish things when he's tired."
"Sit down, darling."
He was already sitting.
Zachary put his right hand flat against his jacket, over the breast pocket.
"I'm not tired," he said.
"I've never been less tired in my life."
He looked at me for the first time since I came in.
His eyes were swollen, and he did not try to make them charming.
"You gave me the letter in the gift pile," he said.
"I found it before my mother did."
I had not expected that.
Nothing in me was ready for it.
"I read it forty times that afternoon," Zachary said.
"In the bathroom with the light on, like a kid."
"I thought it was the best thing anyone had ever written to me."
"Then she took it out of my hand."
"Zachary," Margot said.
"She said, 'Your little scholarship girl is going to ruin the Fellowship.'"
