I went down the stairs before I had decided to.
My dress swung against my knees, and the whole lobby turned its head.
I heard Hattie say, "Oh, here we go," to nobody.
The line parted for me the way a crowd does for a person about to cry.
I wasn't going to cry.
Zane stood at the end of it, where the glass doors let in the cold.
He watched me come the whole way, and his hands opened and closed at his sides.
I stopped in front of him.
There were three hundred people in the lobby, and I could hear every one of them breathe.
"I asked you not to come," I said.
"Yes."
"You came anyway."
"I tried to stay home," he said.
"I got as far as the bait shop stairs and sat down."
"I couldn't make myself be a man who wasn't here."
"It's Zane now," he added.
"I've changed."
He said it softly, in a voice cracked down the middle, and I realized he was saying his old lines.
He was standing in the line from his other life, with his empty hands.
