Chapter 10: The Voice

I flew the afternoon mail run to Boston myself.

Sawyer didn't ask why I'd traded him for it. He just handed me the mail sacks and a thermos.

"Coffee," he said.

"I know what it is. That's the problem."

He almost smiled. We were both being very careful not to look at the wing.

The transplant coordinator met me at the side entrance of the hospital at five, in her coat.

She walked me down a back hallway to an office with no window and a desk covered in binders.

She shut the door.

"I could lose my job for this," she said.

"Then why are you doing it?"

She sat down at her computer.

"Because I've done this for twenty-two years. I've made that call to a lot of families. Nobody ever called me back to say no to lungs." She looked at me. "And then you came through that door with your sister and your pilot and no shoes."

She clicked through three screens.

A log came up. Dates, times, phone numbers.

September 26. 9:41 p.m. Incoming. Less than a minute.

The number beside it ended in 4417.

I knew that number.

It was in my phone under K. It had texted me a hundred times in five years.

"Mrs. Delano has asked that you not attend the Christmas party." "Mr. Delano will be late, don't wait up." "So sorry, the seating chart was printed before I could add you."

"That's her cell," I said. "That's Kenzie Lowell's personal cell."

The coordinator turned up the speaker on the desk and pressed play.

First there was a hum. Loud, rising.

A helicopter engine, spinning up.

Then the coordinator's own voice, crisp: "Transplant line."

And then Kenzie.

Not crying. Not gasping for breath. Low and fast and calm.

"Hi, I'm calling on behalf of the Delano family about Katherine Ingalls. Date of birth March ninth. Patient number..."

She read off Kit's patient number without a single pause.

"The family has discussed it, and Kit's too sick to travel tonight. They're declining the offer. Please give the lungs to someone who can use them."
