Chapter 24: Three Hundred and Twelve

"He's under enormous strain," Constance went on. "The divorce. The press. That woman's lies about our family." She opened one gloved hand toward the stage. "None of it changes what this resort means for your island. A hundred and forty jobs. I'd ask you to remember that when you vote."

She sat back down and folded her hands.

The board in the second row nodded, slowly.

I stood up.

I didn't decide to. My legs did it.

The hall turned to look at me, row by row, the way it had in October.

"Mrs. Delano," I said. "May I?"

The moderator looked at Constance, then at me.

"You're a resident. You've got the floor."

I walked down the aisle.

I had two things in my hands. I'd been holding them so long my fingers ached.

At the front I stopped beside the moderator's table and turned to face the room.

Pierce stepped away from the microphone to give me room.

"Your son isn't unwell," I said to Constance. "He's the first person in your family who's told the truth about that night. You should be proud of him. I am."

Constance looked at me without expression.

I held up the first thing.

Six pages, cream paper, signed in blue ink.

"This is an agreement I signed the week before my wedding," I said. "I was twenty-six. My sister was nineteen and had pneumonia for the third time that winter."
