Chapter 2: Page Fourteen

She rehearses the door kiss with him, makes him beg, and denies him; the agency texts her what to wear.

Page fourteen was the door.

The widow comes down to the ferry office in the rain.

The captain tries to send her away, and she shuts the door on both of them.

The script said, SHE KISSES HIM. HE DOES NOT KISS BACK. THEN HE DOES.

"Show me," Ye-won said. "Where the freeze starts."

"I can't show you. It happens when it happens."

"Then stand at the door."

He walked across the penthouse to the front door and turned around.

He put his back against the wood.

His arms hung at his sides.

Ye-won took off her coat and laid it over the sofa.

She took her time about it, because he was watching, and it turned out she liked being watched by him.

"Read me your line," she said.

"I told you not to come."

"Again. Breathe out first."

"I told you not to come."

It was a good line reading.

It was also dead.

She walked up to him until her shoes touched his.

He was a head taller than she was, and she had to tip her chin up.

"What's your problem with her?"

"The widow?"

"The woman at the door. What does the captain want?"

He thought about it, honestly.

"He wants her to leave," he said. "He wants her to stay."

"Which one is louder?"

His throat moved.

"The second."

"Then say it like the second."

"I told you not to come."

This time there was something under it.

It was a crack, a small hot seam.

Ye-won smiled at him.

"There you are."

She put both hands flat on his chest.

His heart was going hard under her palms.

It was a big, fast, steady heart, and he stood there pretending it wasn't.

"I'm going to kiss you now," she said. "You're not going to kiss me back. Not until I tell you."

"Yes, director."

"Keep your hands at your sides."

"Yes."

She went up on her toes and put her mouth on his.

He was warm and he tasted like green tea.

For three full seconds he did nothing at all.

His lips were soft and still and politely closed.

It was exactly the way he had said it would go.

Then Ye-won opened her mouth and licked once along the seam of his, and she felt him shudder from the chest down.

She pulled back an inch.

"There it is. That's the freeze. You went away."

"I know." His voice was a thread. "I'm sorry."

"Don't be sorry. Be here." She took his bottom lip between her teeth and tugged gently. "Look at me."

His eyes opened.

They were wide and black and wrecked already.

"Stay," she said.

She kissed him again.

She slid her tongue into his mouth, kept her eyes open, and watched him try.

He was clumsy at first.

Then his breath started coming out through his nose in short rough pulls.

His lips opened under hers, and he kissed her back.

Ye-won stopped.

His whole body leaned after her mouth.

"I didn't say you could."

"I'm sorry. Director."

"Did you like it?"

"Yes."

"Say it."

"I liked it." His chest was heaving. "I liked it, I want to do it again."

"Do what again?"

"Kiss you. Please."

Her knees did something unwise.

She took his wrists in her hands, lifted them one at a time, and pressed them flat against the door above his head.

"Keep them there."

He did.

His shirt rode up an inch, and she saw the hard line of his stomach and a thin trail of dark hair going down.

She kissed him again, slowly, with her whole body against his.

This time he kissed her back because she had told him to.

It was open, hot and wet, with a low sound in the back of his throat that she felt in her teeth.

She rolled her hips against his.

He was hard already.

She felt the whole thick length of him through his trousers, pressed into her belly, and he gasped into her mouth.

"Oh," Ye-won said.

"I'm sorry..."

"Stop saying that."

"It's..."

"It's good." She rocked against him again. "It's exactly what the scene needs. A captain who says leave and a body that says stay."

His head went back against the door.

She put her mouth on the side of his throat and sucked, just enough to leave a mark.

His hips jerked into her.

"Director," he said, hoarse, "please."

"Please what?"

"I don't know. Please."

She dragged her hand down his chest, over his stomach, and stopped with her palm flat over the front of his trousers.

He was hot and hard against her hand.

She squeezed him through the cloth, slowly.

His mouth fell open.

"Look at that," Ye-won said. "Eleven years of acting, and this is what the camera never got."

"Please touch me."

"I am touching you."

"Properly."

"Is that a note?"

He shut his eyes.

"It's a request."

"Then ask me nicely."

"Please, director. Please touch me properly."

She undid his belt with one hand.

She opened the button and pulled the zip down, and his cock pushed up hot and heavy against the dark fabric of his shorts.

She held him there, with just her fingertips on the swollen shape of him, wet at the tip through the cotton.

He made a sound she would have paid to hear.

Then she took her hand away.

His eyes flew open.

"Page fourteen ends at the kiss," she said.

"What?"

"The script cuts there. We're running the scene, not the whole night."

He stared at her, flushed from his collar to his hairline, breathing.

"You're joking."

"Do I look like I'm joking?"

"You can't..."

"I can. I'm directing."

She stepped back and straightened his shirt, very slowly.

"Do the kiss again tomorrow. The one with the freeze in it."

"And?"

"This time I want to see you get through it without losing your breath."

"I'm not going to be able to think."

"Good. Don't think. Keep that."

She picked up her coat.

He was still against the door with his arms above his head, because she hadn't told him to put them down.

She let him stay that way a moment longer than she needed to.

"Arms down," she said.

He lowered them.

His hands were shaking.

"Did I pass?" he said.

Ye-won stopped with one arm in her sleeve.

Nobody had asked her that question in a long time.

"It's not a test," she said. "It's a rehearsal."

Her phone buzzed on the sofa.

She reached for it, still flushed, still tasting him, and read the message from an unknown number.

*Dinner tomorrow, 8 PM, Ristorante Mari. Press will be there. Your girlfriend should wear red. Ma Gyeong-su.*

She didn't own anything red.

She turned the phone around and showed him.

Tae-oh read it, and for the first time all night his face went completely cold.
