Chapter 17: The Fuel Dock Office
Alex pressed me against the inside of the office door before the lights were on, and the rain hammered the tin roof over our heads.
The room smelled of diesel and wet rope, the same as it had on the day my father signed.
His coat was soaked through.
So was mine.
He had one hand flat on the door beside my head and his mouth an inch from mine.
"Give me the word," he said.
He had held to it all the way from the docks, through the car and the hotel lobby and Marigo's goodnight.
He was shaking with it.
"Table," I said.
His mouth came down on mine.
It was a deep, hungry kiss that tasted of rain, and it went on while he walked me backward across the dark room.
My hips hit the edge of the long table, the one under the window.
My father had signed on it six weeks ago.
I had been on it in September, in a storm, with this man's hands in my hair.
"That's the place," I said into his mouth.
"Where?"
"Where I'm sitting.
"There's a burn on the corner from the lantern.
"You made me forget my own name against it."
He laughed, low and rough, and shoved the wet coat off my shoulders.
I yanked at his tie.
I got his shirt open with fumbling fingers and put my palms flat on his chest.
His heart was slamming under my hand.
I bit the muscle above his collarbone, hard enough to leave a mark, and he swore.
"Tell me what I did to you here in September," I said.
"You want it said?"
"I want it said in this room."
He gripped my hips and lifted me onto the edge of the table, and his mouth moved against my ear.
"You stood in front of the lantern with your sleeves rolled and your hair coming down," he said.
"You told me to put down the paper and sit.
"You put your hand on the buckle of my belt, and you said, nobody is coming across that causeway tonight."
My breath went short.
"And?" I asked.
"And I let you," he said.
"Say what you let me do."
"Everything," he said.
"You took me in your mouth on this table, and then you took me in your hands, and I came so hard I couldn't stand.
