Chapter 35: Barefoot
Shona's POV
He didn't say a word.
He came the last ten steps at a run, with one arm across his ribs, and he picked me up off the snow.
I let him.
My feet had stopped hurting a block ago, which was worse than hurting.
He carried me back around the corner to the nearest car with its back door hanging open.
He put me in and got in on top of me.
"Go," he said in Russian. "Go, go."
The car went.
Something hit the back window and starred it white.
I twisted around on the seat.
Two men were running down the middle of the street behind us, and one of them stopped and lifted his arm.
The back window came in.
Ilya pushed my head down into his lap and held it there with his whole hand.
The tires screamed on the corner, and then we were on a wider street, and the shots got small behind us.
He let my head up.
He looked at my hands.
"Whose?" he said.
"The guard's."
I opened my right fist.
The empty syringe was still in it, the plunger all the way down.
He stared at it.
"He came up to move me when the shooting started," I said.
"He leaned over the bed to grab my arm, and I put this in the side of his neck."
"What was in it?"
"Enough to drop a drunk who's fighting four orderlies."
I put it on the floor of the car.
"He didn't drop fast enough. He got me by the hair. So I broke his nose with my forehead."
Ilya looked at the blood on my hands again.
"Then he dropped," I said.
My teeth were starting to chatter.
He pulled off his coat, one-armed, and wrapped it round me.
His shirt underneath was soaked red down the left side.
"You're bleeding," I said.
"You're barefoot."
"He took my shoes when they brought me upstairs." I pulled the coat tighter. "He said nobody runs far barefoot in December."
"And?"
"I didn't run. I went out the bathroom window onto the kitchen roof and down the drainpipe into the yard. Then I walked."
