Chapter 44: The Spoon
The man spun around.
Galina brought the spoon down across his wrist with a crack.
He yelled and grabbed for the baby with his other hand.
She hit him in the face with the handle end.
Then again, in the throat, short and hard, the way she chopped onions.
He went down on his knees on the rug, choking.
Galina put her slipper on his back and pushed, and he went to the floor.
"In my nursery," she said. "In my nursery, you come."
The little one woke up on her shoulder and started to scream.
I took her out of Galina's arm and held her against me, and I shouted for Ilya so loud the windows rang.
Then I knelt on the man's good hand.
There was a pistol in the back of his belt.
I pulled it out and slid it across the floor under the crib, as far as it would go.
Ilya came through the door with a gun in his hand and nothing on but his shorts.
He looked at the open crib.
He looked at the man on the floor, and Galina standing on him, and me with our daughter.
He didn't make a sound.
That was worse than if he'd roared.
Two of his men came up the fire stairs a minute later, out of breath.
They had the man in a kitchen chair before the baby stopped crying.
