Chapter 14: The Claiming Rite
Marren Lowry's den smelled of smoke, dried apples and hot sugar.
Wystan ducked under the low lintel, and his mother did not look up from the pan.
"Sit. You're blocking the light."
He sat on the hunter's bench by the wall.
She was a lean woman with black hair cropped short and gone grey at the temples.
Her right ear had a notch bitten out of it that was older than he was.
She was stirring a pan of honey and hazelnuts over the coals, and she tasted a spoonful before she spoke.
"You look like something the dogs left."
"I need to ask how a cub is claimed," Wystan said.
"Which cub?"
"Both."
Marren's spoon paused.
Marren's spoon paused.
"You've never asked me for anything in twenty-seven winters."
"I'm asking."
She waited.
Wystan had never learned to fill a silence, and she knew it.
So he told her.
He told it flat and in order: the cub on the ledge, the call, the price, the cold fire at three in the morning.
He did not tell her about the furs.
She looked at his face while he did not tell her, and he knew she had read it.
