Chapter 11: In Front of the Board

I went to the hospital on Thursday morning in my one good blazer, and I asked the front desk for the chief of obstetrics.

I did not call ahead.

The three words from the unknown number were still on my phone. Look at Janelle.

I had no proof of anything, and Janelle had squeezed my hand twice and been kind both times.

I turned the phone face down in my bag and decided to watch before I accused.

She saw me in a conference room with two members of the review board, because the complaint had named me and they could not very well turn me away.

The chief was a gray-haired woman with half-moon glasses and a stack of printed pages.

She did not offer me coffee.

"Ms. Hartigan. We were going to contact you this week."

"I came instead," I said, and sat down.

"You understand that the complaint alleges a relationship between you and Dr. Moffat while you were under his care."

"I was never under his care."

She raised her eyebrows.

"I climbed onto a table in the teaching clinic on Tuesday, and I walked out before anyone laid a hand on me. I never signed a consent form. Check the chart. There's nothing in it."

One of the board members, a man with a tight mouth, turned a page.

"The chart does say that," he admitted.

"I saw a different doctor, a woman across town, for my actual pain. I'll give you her name. Everything between Dr. Moffat and me happened after that, and it happened because we are two adults who wanted to."

"Who had access to Tuesday's exam list?" I asked.

"The attending and the interns on the rotation," the chief said. "That is being looked at."
