Chapter 19: Not Sorry About Her

Tobias's POV

Larissa's father did not speak for long.

He stood at the front of the hearing room with his hands at his sides.

I watched his jaw work before he said the first word.

"I've known Lachlan thirty years," he said. "He should have come to me before he came to her."

He glanced at Lachlan.

"On Friday he did, and I shoved him off my porch."

Nobody laughed.

"My daughter is twenty-four. I don't like what I've heard in this room, and I don't have to like it."

He turned to the board.

"I came to tell you I won't stand up here and call her a child."

He looked at Larissa once.

Then he sat down in the back row.

His wife sat next to him and took his hand, and he let her.

The board went out to confer, and I sat through the wait with my hands locked together.

The chief read it standing.

Dr. Moffat would receive a formal reprimand for arranging the clinic visit without disclosure.

He would return to full duty in two weeks.

He would no longer supervise Dr. McCallister, and I would move to another attending's service.

Dr. Ferris would be removed from the program pending her resignation.

No patient had been harmed. No complaint against Ms. Hartigan would be recorded.

"That is all," the chief said.

It was over in about four minutes.

Lachlan closed his eyes.

Larissa turned and put her face against my shoulder.

I put my arm around her and did not care who saw.

Over her head, I saw her father stand up in the back.
