Chapter 14: The Traitor

The sergeant at my shoulder brought up her rifle, and ten of my old unit did the same without a word.

Garrow's grin slipped.

"Get that cast out of my road," I said. "Or I'll break the other arm."

His wolves looked at one another.

Then Garrow spat on the asphalt, climbed into his truck, and the line of Silverfang trucks backed away through the trees.

He had dropped a folded sheet on the road.

I picked it up.

It was a route sheet in Blackmoor's own type, with the date of the funeral and the three turns we had taken, and it smelled of two men.

One was Corbin, his cologne and his sweat, and I knew it the way I knew my own name.

The other I had met in a tent, in the dark, in a hood.

We drove to the keep in silence.

The great hall was full, and the old man who had spat at me stood near the back.

I walked down the middle of the room with the sheet in my hand and stopped in front of Mathis's Beta.

"This was printed here," I said. "Three people knew that road. Mathis, me, and you."

"That's a lie," the Beta said. He did not look at Mathis. "Anyone could have sniffed that sheet."

"Anyone could. It has your scent, and Corbin Kettlewell's."

He did not answer.

"Smell it," I said, and held it out.

"I don't need to."

"Then tell the hall why a Silverfang man's cologne is on a Blackmoor print."

Nobody breathed.

Then the Beta's face twisted, and the words came out of him in a rush.

"Because he is a fool!" He turned on Mathis. "Three years you waited on a corpse's daughter. You wrote the Council three times a year. Three times, begging them to let us bury those two and be done. And every time they said no, and you wrote again like a boy at a window."

The hall had gone silent.
