Chapter 21: The Last Move

Mathis's POV

I dressed with one hand pressed to my side and walked down to the yard beside her.

The mark on my throat throbbed with her pulse.

I could feel her at the edge of my head, calm and fierce, as if she had always lived there.

Hester Quill stood at the foot of the keep steps.

Forty wardens in grey stood behind her, rifles slung, and they did not look at my face.

"Alpha Draycott," Hester said. "By the Border Right you signed over to this Council yesterday, I take command of the Eastern posts."

"Yes."

"By the Council's law, I charge you with coercing a pledged ward."

Sabine's head came up.

"The ward is standing here," she said. "Ask her."

"The ward was taken to the Stone under three hundred armed wolves," Hester said, with perfect calm. "She wrote her terms in a field under the eyes of a hostile Alpha. And last night, she was bitten by the man who held her family's bodies."

I heard a low sound behind me.

It was Sabine's wolf, speaking from deep in her chest.

"I asked him," she said. "In my own hand, in my own voice."

"A hostage will say anything," Hester said.

"And you would know."

Hester did not blink.

"The Council will hear the charge today. Alpha Draycott comes with us as our guest, in the cells, until the elders vote."
