Chapter 3: The Arm

Garrow blocks the caskets and grabs her, and she breaks his arm in front of the staff while the Blackmoor Alpha lets her finish, then Garrow laughs from the ground that Corbin knew what she was from the first week.

The yard got up slowly.

People brushed off their knees and did not look at me.

Two Blackmoor wolves in black coats were already unloading the first crate from the truck.

"Hold on," Corbin said.

His smile was back, tight and quick, for the cameras that had found their feet.

"Out of respect for the Ardrey family, the Silverfang chapel will receive the caskets. We have an honor guard ready."

"No," I said.

"Sabine. You are upset, and the Council has not signed off on a transfer." He lowered his voice. "Let me handle this, love."

He had called me love for three years.

It sounded different now. He used it to move me where he wanted me.

"The Council wrote the Accord," Mathis said from beside the truck. "The Council signed it. My orders say the caskets go to her and only her."

"Her mate has the right to receive them."

"She has no mate."

Corbin turned to the yard and spread his hands.

"Garrow."

Garrow Lazenby came up beside him with his bald head shining, still pale from kneeling, and a look on his face I had seen before.

It was the look of a man who wants someone smaller to pay for his fear.

He walked past me to the first crate and put his palm flat on the lid.

"Nobody's moving this till Alpha says," he said.

The two Blackmoor wolves stopped.

I walked up to him.

"Take your hand off my father."

"Your father?" Garrow laughed. "You're a rear-logistics Omega who cried over a necklace. You don't have a father, you have a dead file."

I said nothing.

He grabbed my wrist.

His fingers closed hard, and he pulled me in close enough that I could smell the whiskey from last night on his breath.

"You want to see the Ghost General?" he said. "Ask nicely."

The yard had gone quiet again.

I had spent four years breaking men twice his size in rooms with no windows.

I turned my wrist against his thumb, and his grip opened.

I stepped inside his guard and caught his forearm in both hands.

Then I put my knee into the crook of his elbow and pushed the bone the wrong way.

It broke with a crack that carried across the whole yard.

Garrow screamed.

He dropped to the ground holding his arm against his chest, and his boots kicked once in the gravel.

Nobody moved.

I stood over him with my breath even.

Then I looked up and found Mathis Draycott watching me.

His wolf was in his face.

His lip had lifted off his teeth when Garrow touched me, and he had taken one step forward before he stopped.

He had stopped on purpose.

He had let me finish.

When our eyes met, he closed his mouth and the step went back.

"Medic," Corbin said sharply. "Get a medic."

No one came forward.

I crouched beside Garrow, who was sobbing through his nose.

"You touched my dead," I said quietly. "You will never touch anything of mine again."

"You're crazy," he gasped. "You're crazy, you're nobody, you were always nobody."

"I was always an Alpha."

I stood up and turned to the Blackmoor wolves.

"Take them to the hangar. Put them where I can see them."

They obeyed me without looking at their Alpha.

Mathis gave them a short nod.

As the first crate rolled past me, I put my hand flat on the lid for a moment and said nothing at all.

When I looked down again Garrow was watching me from the gravel, with his eyes wet and his mouth stretched into something like a smile.

"You think he didn't know," he whispered.

"Who?"

"Corbin." He licked blood from his lip. "He knew what you were the first week, Sabine. He's known for three years."

I felt the ruby in my pocket, with its one flat edge against my knuckles.

Across the yard Corbin was already walking toward the hangar, and he did not look back.
