Chapter 11: Who Owns the Note

I drove to the east side in six minutes and ran a yellow light to do it.

The roll-up door was open, and Dennis was standing in the middle of the shop with a cabinet door in both hands.

He was holding it over his head.

Caleb stood ten feet away with his arms at his sides, in no hurry at all.

"Put it down, Dennis," he said. "You'll hurt yourself."

"You did this!" Dennis's face was red and wet. "You and your sneaky little LLC!"

"What LLC?"

"Don't play dumb. I called the county. The new holder of my mortgage is Rooney Holdings, and it was set up the same week my checks started bouncing. Ask him, Jo." He swung the door toward Caleb. "Ask him who owns my note!"

The shop was very quiet.

A drill press ticked as it cooled.

I looked at Caleb.

"Is that true?"

He looked at me, and I waited for him to laugh, or to ask Dennis what he was talking about.

He didn't.

"Jo," he said. "Not here."

"Is it true?"

"Yes."

Something dropped in my stomach and kept dropping.

I heard the cabinet door hit the concrete floor, and I realized Dennis had let go of it.

"I told you!" Dennis crowed. "I told you he was a snake!"

"Get out," I said.

"Jo, listen to me, he's been using you!"

"I said get out."

I walked across the shop and put a hand flat on my uncle's chest and pushed.

I'm five foot six and he's six feet and a hundred and ninety pounds, and he went backward across the floor with his arms flapping.

"You're out of your mind, just like your mother!"

"Thank you," I said. "She'd be proud."

I pushed him all the way out to the sidewalk.
