Chapter 16: The Envelope
The dean's secretary had not yet unlocked the outer door when Chris arrived.
He stood in the corridor with two sealed envelopes in his hand and waited.
When the dean came, she looked at him, then at the envelopes, and held the door.
"Mr. Chesbro."
"I want to return this."
He set them on her desk.
"Eight hundred dollars," he said. "I haven't opened them."
"May I ask why?"
"I didn't earn it."
"You tutored every week."
"I tutored someone who didn't need a tutor."
The dean's eyebrows moved a very small distance.
"I can't say more," Chris said. "It isn't mine to say."
The dean studied him.
She did not ask what he meant, and he was grateful.
"But you want to end the arrangement."
"Yes, ma'am."
