On Saturday, the Great Hall smelled of floor polish and nervous pencils.
Sixty Seniors sat at separate desks, in rows.
Chris sat in the third row by the tall window.
He had slept in the dorm for the first time in weeks, on a real mattress, under a real blanket.
His mother had gone home in the neighbor's truck, saying she would hear the result by phone.
She had pressed a meatloaf sandwich into his bag.
He found it, and smiled.
Leander sat three rows back.
He had walked in with a pencil behind his ear and a calm face, but his knee jumped under the desk.
The proctor raised her hand.
"You may begin."
The first hour went the way Chris had hoped.
He took the long problems slowly, wrote them out clean, and let his hands go steady.
