Chapter 17: Trust Fall
Ciro shook the rain off his shoulders and walked down the room between the red booths.
He didn't hurry.
I took my hand out from under Rino's, slowly, and picked up my sparkling water.
My heart was going.
Ciro stopped at our booth and looked down at the two of us.
Then he looked at me.
I looked back and didn't blink.
I couldn't tell him anything. Not with my face. Not with Rino watching both of us.
I could only look at him and hope.
"Uncle," Ciro said.
"Nephew. Sit, sit. You hungry? The veal's good tonight."
Ciro slid into the booth next to me.
His thigh pressed against mine under the table. He left it there.
He picked a clam out of my bowl with his fingers and ate it.
"You're right," he said. "It's good."
Rino watched him.
"I'm glad you came," Rino said. "I wanted you to see this with your own eyes. Your girl and I were talking business."
"She does that."
"She was telling me what she's worth."
Ciro wiped his fingers on my napkin.
