Chapter 13: Does She Know?

"Which of you did this?" I asked.

I held the green book against my chest with both arms, and my voice came out flat.

"Our father," Cas said.

He did not come into the room.

He stood in the doorway with his hands open at his sides, and Leo stood behind him.

"Bronislaw Kostka," Leo said. "He kept that book for forty years."

"What is it?"

"A list of the women who worked in this house," Cas said. "Every winter he hired a new girl. He used them."

He said the word without softening it.

"He paid them to go," Leo said, "and he wrote down what he paid."

"My mother is in it."

"Yes," said Cas.

I felt it go through me, cold and slow.

"She was nineteen," I said.

"They all were, or close to it," Leo said. "He liked them young and new and far from home."

He took a breath.

"None of them were children, Siobhan. He was careful about that. It's the only careful thing about him."

"Don't make it better."

"I'm not," Leo said. "I'm telling you the worst part so you don't have to ask."

I looked from one to the other.
