Chapter 10: Say My Real Name
The door of Room Seven slammed so hard that the paper panel split.
Tae-gang had Seo-hwan against it before the sound stopped.
He pinned both his wrists above his head with one hand, and bent so close that their noses touched.
"You lied to me."
"You lied to me first," Seo-hwan snarled.
"I lied about my name."
"So did I!"
"You said you were a scholar!"
"You said you were a farm boy! Do you know how many nights I lay awake on that floor?"
"I tried to understand how a farm brat could parry like that!"
"You never asked."
"Because I was afraid of the answer!" Seo-hwan's voice cracked. "And it was worse. It was so much worse."
His left arm still hung dead in Tae-gang's grip, the fingers cold and limp.
Tae-gang noticed, and his fury wavered, and he made his hold on that arm gentle.
Seo-hwan saw it.
His mouth twisted.
"Don't," he said. "Don't be careful with me. Not now."
"I'm not."
"You are. Stop it."
"Then tell me to stop."
"I won't."
Their eyes locked, black and furious and wet, and the whole room seemed to tilt.
Then Seo-hwan jerked his head forward and kissed him.
It was not a kiss.
It was a fight with mouths, teeth and tongues, hot and furious and open, and Tae-gang growled into it and kissed back harder.
Seo-hwan's good hand tore at his collar.
"Take it off," he gasped. "Your band. Take the stupid band off. I want to see it."
Tae-gang let him go.
He tore his shirt over his head, and the wrapped cloth underneath, hard, with both hands, and flung it across the room.
The black tiger crouched across his left chest.
It was a hand wide, with gold in its eyes, mid-leap.
The lamp caught the ink, and the gold shimmered.
Seo-hwan stared at it.
"The mark of the Hall," he breathed. "I've seen the sketches. I've never."
"Your turn."
