Chapter 8: The Chimney Roof
The roof of the east dormitory was flat, and warm in the middle.
The kitchen chimney rose from the center of it, a thick square of old brick.
The heat of the fire below came up through it.
The first snow had begun.
It fell in slow, fat flakes out of a pewter sky, and melted the instant it touched the tiles near the chimney.
Ju-an shut the stairwell hatch behind them.
He did not say anything.
He took Tae-gang by both wrists and walked him back until his shoulders hit the warm brick, and pressed against him, chest to chest.
His broken spectacles were in his pocket.
Without them, his eyes were furious and wet and very black.
"I wanted to kill him," Ju-an said.
"Me too."
"You nearly broke his wrist."
"I wanted to."
"I know." Ju-an's hands slid up to Tae-gang's face. "I could feel you shaking. Dae-sik. Rock. You're shaking now."
Tae-gang was.
It was not the cold, and it was not fear exactly.
It was that every muscle in his body wanted to hit something.
The only thing near him was Ju-an, soft and angry and holding on.
"I can't fight him," Tae-gang said hoarsely. "If I fight him properly, I'll show everything. I'll hurt him, and I'll show."
"So don't fight him properly."
"I don't know how to do it any other way."
"Then let me help," Ju-an said. "Tonight. Here."
His thumb rubbed over Tae-gang's lower lip.
"Let me take care of you."
The words went through Tae-gang.
He had always been the big one.
He was the one people leaned on, the one who held the door and lifted the cart.
Nobody had ever said it to him, in a quiet voice, with their whole face open.
"How?" he heard himself say.
"Turn around."
Tae-gang turned.
He laid his palms flat against the warm bricks, and the heat sank into his hands.
