Chapter 18: The Last Week
Ronan took the word without arguing.
He nodded once, and the muscle in his jaw jumped.
"Then I'll do whatever you need to get you there," he said. "You tell me where to stand."
"Why aren't you fighting me?" I said.
"Because you came to me with two years of reasons, and I've only got six days of ones."
"That's not an answer."
"It's the true one," he said. "If you're free and you still pick me, it counts. If I make you stay, it doesn't."
I looked at him for a long time.
He did not look away.
The bond tugged at me, and I realized I was going to miss the ache.
I did not tell him that.
For five days the pack women brought food to the cabin every night, and I ate it at Hazel's table with the whole kitchen full of them.
Mirelle moved to her aunt's house across the valley and left a note for me under the door.
It said: Thank you for not letting me keep lying.
On the sixth night, the night before the dark moon, I walked up to the big house at dusk.
I didn't go to the study.
I went to the Luna's suite, where my things had never stopped being mine, and I sat on the edge of the bed with my father's mended coat folded beside me.
I sent Ronan one word through the link.
Come.
He took longer than I expected.
I heard him stop outside the door and stand there.
"Come in," I said.
He came in and shut the door and stood against it.
"It's the last night," he said.
"It is."
"I'll do whatever you say."
"Then sit," I said, and pointed to the armchair by the window.
He sat.
I stood in front of him and took off my sweater.
