Chapter 16: The Visitor
Sawyer's face did not move.
He had kept it still in front of the portrait, and he kept it still now, and it cost him more than the baton.
"Dated the second," Ernest said gently. "Vernon likes to be organized."
"Ernest," Sallow whispered.
"Sit down, Vernon."
Sawyer folded the sheet in half and put it inside his shirt.
"Keep it," Ernest said. "Consider it a down payment. You have until noon on Friday to sign, and until then you're our guest."
"Where?"
"The visiting room. Glass on both sides, a cot, and Captain Hargis down the hall." Ernest picked up his tea. "The block will eat tonight, I'm told. Strikes end when their King is looked after."
The visiting room was a narrow slot split by a pane of plexiglass, with a steel pass-through drawer under it for legal papers.
Someone had dragged in a cot.
Sawyer sat on it with the cremation order against his ribs and counted the hours to Friday.
The door opened at nine that night.
Lorena came in with a blood-pressure cuff, a guard behind her, and a face scrubbed raw by the surgical sink.
