Chapter 18: The Highway
Sawyer counted turns in the dark.
Left out of the sally port, a long straight with the gate arm gone, right onto the county blacktop.
The van's tires hummed.
Hargis sang along with a country station, badly, and tapped the wheel on the off-beats.
Under Sawyer's cheek a sheet hem crackled with every bump.
Two hundred little pills lay in the tape an inch from his ear.
Two hours in the cart had taught him the exact weight of a captain's good mood.
Mile marker nineteen.
The radio crackled with the follow car's driver, a guard with a nasal voice.
"Captain, there's a county unit sitting at the Butte turnoff."
"Is there."
"Two. Lights off."
The singing stopped.
Sawyer felt the van slow, and slow again, and the pitch of the engine drop.
"Come about," Hargis said, softly. "Back to the Ridge. Tell the warden we've had a leak."
"Captain, they've seen us."
A siren whooped, once, close.
Hargis swore.
The van lurched, and Sawyer slid hard against the cart's wall as the whole machine swung across the road.
