Chapter 6: The Daughter

Mabel looked at the fire for a moment before she began.

"Your mother was the last offering," she said. "She walked up this mountain on her eighteenth birthday, the same as you."

"The pack says the offerings die."

"The pack says what your brothers' father taught it to say." Mabel's mouth went flat. "She came back down on the fourth day with a silver wolf and the Moon's mark on her wrist. She was the Moon's Daughter."

"What is that?"

Mabel glanced at Rafe, and he gave the smallest nod.

"The Marrick seat is not an Alpha's," she said. "It never was. It belongs to the Moon's Daughter of the line, and an Alpha only keeps it for her."

"Keeps it."

"Your father ruled as the Daughter's mate. After she died, he ruled as her husband's heir. When he died, Elias held it for you, and Dustin beside him. That's the law, Hazel. Your brothers are regents."

The tea went cold in my hands.

"Until what?"

"Until a Daughter of your mother's blood offers herself and the Moon takes her." Mabel's eyes did not leave mine. "Which you did this noon."

I set the mug down because my hand would not hold it.

"So the seat is mine."

"It's yours to claim, in the Moon Hall, before the pack, at the Blood Moon rite. Nobody else can."

I laughed, and it came out wrong.

"Elias keeps the Law Book in a glass case," I said. "He told me it was too old for me."

"It's the oldest thing the pack owns. It's got the page in it."

"He never let me through the Moon Hall door."

"He couldn't. A Daughter who hears the rite read aloud will start to know what she is."
