Chapter 9: The Locked Room
"Take my sister upstairs," Elias said.
He had found his voice again, and it was level and cold.
"She's overwrought. A new wolf can turn on the people around her. It's the pack's rule that she's kept quiet until it settles."
"There's no such rule," the Beta said.
"There is when I say there is."
Two of his warriors came in from the hall.
The eldest elder drew herself up.
"Alpha, a grown she-wolf can't be shut away on your word."
"A regent of this pack can, Elder, and I am responsible for her. You can bring it before the council after the Blood Moon."
He had put the word regent in the room, and I looked at him sharply.
He had said it by accident, and he knew it a breath too late.
The warriors took my arms.
I could have howled for Rafe, and he would have come through the wall.
I let them walk me up the stairs instead.
The door of my old room closed, and a key turned in the lock from the outside.
I stood in the middle of the room.
My narrow bed was still made, and the shelf still held my four paperbacks and a jar of dried lavender.
In eighteen years it had never looked so small.
I sat on the bed and counted the creaks of the house until the voices downstairs went quiet.
At midnight the key turned again.
Dustin slipped in and shut the door behind him.
He stood with his back against it in the dark.
"I didn't come to tell you to stay," he said.
"Then why did you come?"
"To open the door."
"Say what you came to say, Dustin."
He drew a long breath.
"I read the law the night Father died," he said. "Elias was at the bedside, and I went into the study alone. The Book was open on the desk, and it was open to the page."
