Chapter 22: Proposal
The river was brown and fast and full of light.
We walked along the south bank with our hands in each other's coat pockets, and neither of us spoke for a long time.
Benedict stopped at a bench facing the water.
"I need to say something," he said, "and I'm not sure I'll say it well."
"You always say it well."
"No. I say it correctly. This is different."
He turned and took both my hands.
"Susie, in three weeks you've found a mistake my whole team missed."
"And you did it standing up."
He laughed, and then he went serious.
"I was engaged for fourteen months to a girl I didn't love, because my father's friend asked me to."
"I know."
"I never once felt what I feel when you walk into a room and tell me my number is wrong."
I couldn't speak.
He reached into his coat and took out a small box.
It was plain navy, with no ribbon.
He opened it.
