Chapter 4: Four Heartbeats

Merrick said four hours, and Gerard's hunters were there in two.

I had my bag half packed on the motel bed when the lock gave with a crack.

The door hit the wall and two men came through it.

They wore black coats and they were smiling.

"Evening, Your Grace," the taller one said. "Lord Gerard sends his regards."

I grabbed the electric kettle off the table and threw it.

It caught him in the shoulder and spilled hot water down his coat, and he did not even blink.

"She's a fighter," the shorter one said. "He'll like that."

He moved, and I did not see him cross the room.

His hand closed on the front of my sweatshirt and my back hit the wall.

I stopped breathing and kept my other hand away from my stomach, and every nerve in me said arm's length, arm's length, arm's length.

He was a hand's width from my ribs.

If he stayed still, if he listened, he would hear three heartbeats under my own.

His eyes narrowed, and I screamed.

I screamed as loud as I had ever screamed in my life, a raw sound straight from the throat that would carry through the thin motel walls and into the next room.

He flinched, because vampire ears are sensitive.

The window shattered.

Merrick came through it in a spray of glass, and the hunter's grip left my sweatshirt.

The room was a blur of coats and fists and splintering furniture.

I slid down the wall and covered my head.
