Chapter 15: The Study

Rhys's POV

I gave the driver of the second car one instruction, and he ran two lights.

The location on my phone had stopped moving on the north shore, at an address I knew better than any other.

My father's house.

I left the car in the drive with the door open.

Augustin was on the steps when I reached them.

"Rhys," he said. "You're early. I was going to send for you."

"Where is she?"

"In the sitting room, with tea. She's perfectly safe. The doctor has gone home."

"You sent a false order and a car."

"I sent for my son's wife, to talk like family."

He turned and went in.

"Leave your phone in the hall. We'll talk in the study."

I left the phone on the hall table, so he would think I had nothing in my pockets.

In the sitting room Annika sat very straight, with a cup in both hands.

She looked at me once. I nodded once. She did not put the cup down.

The study door shut.

My father poured two whiskeys and did not offer me one.

"Your brother is acting chief executive," he said. "Your thirty-five percent is worth nothing if the board won't seat you."

"Go on."

"Sign your shares into a trust in Emmett's name. I'll give you the Phoenix hotels, free and clear."

"And Annika?"
