Chapter 11: Tea at Greywater

In the morning I woke with his arm over my hip, and I let myself have one minute of it.

Then I asked him what he had promised Verity.

Bram lay on his back with his eyes on the ceiling.

"I can't tell you," he said.

"You swore, in this cabin, that I'd get one true answer a night."

"I know."

"You said there was no 'I can't.'"

"I know what I said." He turned his head. "Lin, if I tell you, it gets worse for you. I can't explain how without telling you. I'm asking you to wait nine more days."

"Eight," I said. "And I'm not waiting."

I sat up and pulled the sheet over my breasts.

He had taken a silver blade for me, and I had held him through a fever, and it was the first night in three years I had slept without bracing.

None of that was enough.

I wasn't going to be the woman who forgave a locked door because the sex was good.

"You just broke term two. So I'm using term three. I can leave when I want, and you won't follow. Those were the words."

His face went flat.

"Where?"

"Greywater."

"Linnea, that's Garland's house."

"It's Verity's house, too, and she's the one who keeps telling me to ask you things. So I'll ask her."

He sat up.

I watched him work through every argument he had, and put each one down.

"Take Burke to the gate," he said at last. "Take Addie. Don't eat or drink anything they give you. I'll stay here." He swallowed. "I won't follow."

"Good."

I dressed and found Addie making coffee in the kitchen with her hair standing up in a nest.
