Chapter 21: On His Knees

Three days later Bram asked the whole pack to the ridge and told them to bring nothing.

I stood at the edge of the circle in my own jeans and a borrowed jacket, with my wolf quiet and warm under my ribs for the first time in three years.

Addie had braided my hair and refused to say why.

"Because he asked me to," she said finally. "And because I wanted to see your face."

"You'll see it."

"Good."

The moonstones were pale in the morning light.

Two hundred Blackthorn wolves stood in the ring.

Bram walked into the middle of the ring alone.

He had a bandage on his ribs and a split lip.

He stood by the tallest stone with his left hand held out at his side, the palm open, and the scars showing.

"I'm going to tell you something," he said. "I'll say it once, and I'll say all of it."

His voice carried to the trees.

He told them about the curse on a bride's womb, and the price, and the cut he had paid for two years.

He told them he had done it so that she could carry.

He didn't dress it up.

"And I let you call her barren," he said. "I heard it in the kitchens, and I heard it in the hall. I could have stopped it with one sentence. I let you say it to her face, and I stood beside her while you did."
