Chapter 5: Terms
The Ridge cabin sat two hours up a forest road, at the end of a gravel track no car came up by accident.
Bram carried my bag in from the truck and set it on the table without a word.
It was one big room with a woodstove, a kitchen along the back wall and a single bedroom with a door that locked.
He had brought me here a month after the bonding, and we had spent a week in that bedroom and hardly left it.
I didn't let myself look at the bed.
Burke had followed us up and parked his truck across the end of the track.
He raised two fingers to me through the windshield and stayed where he was.
Bram lit the stove, and I stood by the window with my arms crossed and my coat still on.
"I'm going to say three things," I said. "You'll agree to all three or I'll walk down this mountain on my own feet."
"Say them."
"One. You sleep outside my door. On the porch, in the front room, I don't care. You don't come in, and you don't put a hand on me."
His jaw moved.
"Agreed."
"Two. Every night I get to ask you one question, and you answer it. The truth, with no 'not yet' and no 'I can't'."
He was quiet for a moment.
"That one's hard."
"You promised the first litter to Garland Ashdane and you let me find out at a stone. Hard is what you've got."
"Agreed," he said. "Within the oath."
"There's no within. Nothing in this cabin is within."
"Linnea."
"Agree, or go back down."
He looked at the floor, and then at me.
"Agreed," he said, and it cost him.
"Three. I can leave when I want. You won't follow me, and you won't send Burke after me, and you won't put a guard on the gate. If I decide I'm going, I go."
