Chapter 12: The Photo

I put on my mother's jacket and went to work.

The three of them wanted to go in with me, and I told them no.

"If we walk in together, it proves the headline," I said. "I'll go in alone."

"Daphne," Anson said.

"Rule three says I can leave any day I choose. Today I'm choosing to walk in."

He looked at me for a long moment, and let me go.

The lobby was full of people.

They were standing in small groups with their phones in their hands, and when I came through the doors, every one of them went quiet.

I crossed the white marble at an even pace.

I could feel the stares on my back, and I kept my chin up.

The receptionist stood up behind her desk.

Her eyes were red.

"Ms. Birchall," she said. "I'm so sorry. I didn't send it."

"I know you didn't."

"Everybody thinks I did. I have been here since seven and I have not left this desk." Her voice cracked. "I swear to you."

"Look at me."

She looked.

"Who can see the lobby camera?" I asked.

She blinked.

"Security. They have the feed in the basement. And the chief of staff's office has a link, for the visitor schedule."

"Anyone else?"

"The partners could, if they asked. They never have."

"Thank you."

I turned.

Meredith was standing by the elevator, with her hand pressed to her throat.
