Chapter 16: Ours
The board chair did not wait for three o'clock.
He took the head of the glass table in the forty-first floor conference room, with his two directors on either side, and put a printed copy of the gossip site's page in front of him.
THE THREE BOSSES' NEW TOY.
He had underlined the caption in red.
Meredith was gone.
Anson had walked her to the elevator himself, and a guard had taken her badge, and she had not looked back once.
The three founders sat on one side of the table.
I sat at the far end, alone, in my mother's jacket, with my hands folded.
"Ms. Birchall," the chair said. "I want to be fair to you."
"Thank you."
"This company has a conduct policy. It applies to partners and staff alike. A relationship between a partner and a subordinate is a breach, and a relationship with three of them is..." He searched for the word. "Remarkable."
Gray opened his mouth.
Anson laid two fingers on the table, and Gray shut it.
"There are two ways to deal with this," the chair said. "The company issues a statement that Ms. Birchall's position was unsuitable and she has been released with severance. Or the board considers whether the three of you are fit to lead."
"That's the choice," Anson said.
"It's the only one the shareholders will accept."
"Then I'd like to hear what the third director thinks."
The younger of the two directors, a woman with silver at her temples, looked up in surprise.
"I haven't said anything," she said.
"You're about to say that we have a pattern. Nine women, in eleven years." Anson took a stack of pages from Josiah and pushed it down the table. "Read the first one."
She read it.
I watched her mouth go thin.
She passed it to the chair, who read it, and then the next, and the next.
The room was silent except for paper.
