Chapter 18: The Funeral
My mother had planned her own funeral on a legal pad, in pencil, with three exclamation points.
NO PREACHER.
NO LILIES.
BILLIE TALKS FOR FIVE MINUTES AND NOT ONE MORE.
We buried her on Tuesday afternoon on a hillside in Plaza Midwood, beside her mother, under an oak that had gone the color of rust.
The sky was low and clean.
Two hundred people stood on the wet grass in dark coats.
I knew some of them.
The woman from the Heritage Club who had held Annalise at her christening stood near the front.
The father with the scholarship daughter stood beside four of my mother's old assistants.
Others I had never seen before, men and women in Kenworthy fleeces who had driven in on their lunch hour.
Piers stood at my shoulder in his charcoal overcoat.
He did not touch me, and he did not go more than a step away.
The coffin was plain pine, with a green silk scarf folded on the lid.
I stepped up to the head of it and took out a note card.
