"A drunk's affidavit," Roland said, when the notary had finished.
"Bought with a motel room, from a girl who has lost her mind."
"Sit down, Mr. Kenworthy," said the woman in the navy suit.
She had stood up.
Her voice shook, but she did not stop.
"I am the lead independent director, and I am calling the vote on the motion to strike the veto clause."
"It needs two-thirds of the shares present."
"Cards up, please."
Eight hundred green cards rose into the white light.
Two young tellers walked the aisles with tablets.
Roland's card stayed in his lap.
On the stage the electric board at the back of the hall began to count.
Fifty-one percent.
Fifty-eight.
Sixty-three point four.
It slowed, and it stopped, and it hung there.
"Sixty-four point two," called the teller at the front.
"That's two and a half points short of the threshold."
A long groan went through the hall.
"The estate of Hal Kenworthy, thirty-one percent, votes no," Roland said, pleasantly, from the table.
