"If I take it, I'll be back in that building by seven every morning," Piers said.
"I'll be wearing a badge again."
"You think I'll mind the badge?"
"I think you'll mind who I was wearing it for."
I turned my face on his chest.
"Take it," I said.
"Say no to her when she's wrong, and say it where people can hear."
"That's the whole job."
His laugh shook the bed.
On Sunday the duplex smelled of onions for the first time in four months.
I had pushed my mother's old pine table into the middle of the yellow kitchen and found five chairs for it.
One of them had a cracked cane seat and a green cushion that still held the shape of her.
Nobody sat in it, and nobody moved it.
Cordelia arrived at five with a paper bag.
She stood in the doorway in a plain gray sweater, with her hair pinned up and the white temple showing.
"Onions," she said.
"Nine pounds."
