Chapter 13: Please Be Kind

I dressed quickly and came down the stairs with Rafe one step behind me.

I opened the door myself.

"Ma'am," said the older officer. "Are you Hallie Bradstreet?"

"I am."

"Are you safe in this house?"

"Yes."

"We got a call that a man broke in and is holding you here."

"He didn't break in," I said. "I walked down my own path this morning and asked him in."

The younger officer looked past me at Rafe, who stood in the hall with his hands open at his sides.

"Is that true, sir?"

"It's her house," Rafe said. "Ask her anything you want."

"I'd rather show you," I said.

My father had put a camera over the porch light eleven years ago, after a break-in at one of his sites.

I had never once looked at it.

I opened the camera app on my own phone and held it out to them.

It was all there.

Ten past six, me with a ledger under my arm and my bare feet in the wet grass.

The truck window going down.

Me waving Rafe to the door, and him standing a long moment before he followed.

"That's not a woman being held," the older officer said.

"No."

"Who made the call?"

"A woman," the younger one said, checking his pad. "She said she was a nurse and a close friend. She said she had a key and was too scared to use it."

"She has a key," I said. "She used it at three this morning."

Both officers looked at me.

"Do you want to report that?" the older one asked.

I looked at Rafe.
